The most common question I'm asked by my clients is "how do you find the patience to do photo-sessions with children?". Its a question with many answers the most obvious being that I love my job, but in all honesty its simply not as stressful when the children aren't your own. I am a mother so I know how unpredictable babies and children can be, I am also well equipped to read children's moods and can preempt those telltale boredom signs, which means I can move a session forwards to make sure the possible tantrums or meltdowns don't interrupt the time I have with a family. Obviously I can't prevent every tantrum, we all have off days. But I have found that my most successful sessions are those when the parents are relaxed. Its so easy to become worried and stressed when our children aren't listening or behaving as we would like, and these situations can lead to even less cooperative children. I try to keep all my sessions relaxed, I allow more time than is necessary particularly for newborns who may need cuddles from Mummy or a feed. Each session is different and geared around the family and childs needs, and I encourage parents to sit back and let the kids play freely, allowing me to engage with them and get what we need to make beautiful happy portraits. This is little Edens session, she was as you can see a pure delight, happy and smiley and having fun - but then again so were Mum and Dad!
